About Paroaria capitata (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837)

The yellow-billed cardinal, scientifically known as Paroaria capitata (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837), is a bird species that belongs to the tanager family Thraupidae. It is not very closely related to the true cardinals that belong to the family Cardinalidae. This species naturally occurs in Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay, and northern Argentina, and has been introduced to the island of Hawaiʻi. It breeds in moist shrubland. The yellow-billed cardinal can easily be confused with the red-crested cardinal. It can be distinguished from that species by its lack of a crest.
