Parkinsonia texana (A.Gray) S.Watson is a perennial flowering tree species belonging to Fabaceae, the pea family. It is native to Texas in the United States, as well as the Mexican states of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi, and Tamaulipas. This species has several common names: Texas palo verde, Border palo verde, and Retama china. Parkinsonia texana can grow as a shrub or small tree, reaching a maximum height of 7.6 meters (25 feet) and a maximum diameter of 6 meters (20 feet). It tolerates heat and drought, and grows best in alkaline soils. It has thin, green bark. Its flowers are most often yellow, but can sometimes be red, and they bloom between April and June.
