About Parantica aglea (Stoll, 1782)
Two subspecies of Parantica aglea are recognized, but neither subspecies form has consistent markings or consistent habitat preferences. The British Museum's collection holds specimens of the nominal subspecies Parantica aglea aglea collected from Myanmar, alongside other specimens from Mysore that are indistinguishable from the typical form of Parantica aglea melanoides. The subspecies Parantica aglea aglea is distributed in Sri Lanka and the Western Ghats, with its range extending north to Pune and the Nilgiris. Parantica aglea melanoides is distributed across the Himalayas from Kashmir to Nepal, as well as in the Sylhet and Chittagong regions of Bangladesh, in Assam (India), in Myanmar, and in Tenasserim. The full species range of Parantica aglea includes the Western Ghats mountains, northeastern India, Sri Lanka, and the Malay Peninsula. Caterpillars of Parantica aglea use two dogbane species, Vincetoxicum bracteatum and Vincetoxicum dalzellii, as food plants.
