About Paranomus dispersus Levyns

Paranomus dispersus Levyns, called langkopsepter in Afrikaans, is a shrub that grows up to 1.5 m (4.9 ft) tall. It mainly flowers from August to November. While fire kills the entire above-ground plant, its seeds survive. The species produces bisexual flowers that are pollinated by insects. Fruit ripens two months after flowering, after which seeds fall to the ground and are spread by ants. The shrub occurs across multiple South African mountain ranges: from the Great Winterhoek Mountains through the Riviersonderend Mountains to the Outeniqua Mountains, as well as on Swartberg and Rooiberg. It grows in sandstone-derived sand at altitudes between 300 and 1,200 m (980–3,940 ft).
