About Panthea virginarius Grote, 1880
Panthea virginarius, commonly known as the Cascades panthea, is a moth that belongs to the family Noctuidae. It is primarily distributed west and north of the Great Basin. Its range extends from the coast of southern California north to the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia and the Alaskan Panhandle, and east to central California, northern Nevada, Idaho, north-western Wyoming, western Montana, and south-western Alberta. A separate disjunct population of this species occurs in the Cypress Hills of Alberta and Saskatchewan. This species shows high variation in both size and colour; for example, the angelica and portlandia forms of this moth were classified as distinct separate species until 2009. The larvae of Panthea virginarius feed on Pseudotsuga menziesii and other conifers.
