About Panopoda carneicosta Guenée, 1852

Panopoda carneicosta, commonly known as the brown panopoda, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. This species was first formally described by Achille Guenée in 1852. It is distributed across North America, with its range extending south from Ontario, Quebec, and Maine to Florida, west to Texas, and north again to Wisconsin and Minnesota. The wingspan of adult brown panopoda moths measures between 38 and 46 millimeters. Reported flight periods for this species vary between sources: Charles V. Covell Jr. lists a flight season from May to August, while Ohio State University cites a flight period from April to September. Regardless of source, this moth is most commonly observed in June and July. In the northern portion of its range, this species produces one generation per year; in the southern portion, it may produce two generations annually. The larvae of Panopoda carneicosta feed on the leaves of basswood, oak, hickory, and willow.
