About Panicum capillare L.

Panicum capillare L. is an annual bunchgrass that grows either decumbent or erect, reaching heights of over one meter (3 feet). Its color ranges from green to green tinged with blue or purple. The plant is quite hairy in texture, with particularly prominent hairiness on its leaves and nodes. Its ligule takes the form of a fringe of long hairs. The inflorescence is a large, open panicle that can make up more than half of the plant's total length, growing up to half a meter long. When the plant reaches maturity, the panicle fans out, spreading to a width of over 20 centimeters. As the plant dies and dries out, the entire panicle may break away from the rest of the plant and become a tumbleweed.
