About Pancratium canariense Ker Gawl.
Pancratium canariense Ker Gawl. is a bulbous perennial with glaucous leaves. It produces quite large bulbs that measure 12–15 cm in diameter, with a short neck. This species grows during the winter and is dormant in the summer. Its scape can reach up to 80 cm tall. Its flowers grow in a multiflowered umbel; they are white with a corona, very fragrant, and bloom in the fall. Pancratium illyricum, a species from southern Europe, is very similar to P. canariense. Unlike P. canariense, P. illyricum has narrower leaves, shorter flower stalks, and flowers in the spring. This plant is easy to grow and flowers freely when planted in a sunny spot. It does not tolerate frost, but is considered well-suited for fog-belt coastal Californian gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 10.
