About Pammene aurana (Fabricius, 1775)
Pammene aurana (Fabricius, 1775) has a wingspan of 9–13 mm. Adults of this moth species have chocolate brown or reddish brown forewings marked with yellow-orange blotches. Most individuals show two almost round yellow-orange spots just before the outer edge of the forewing, and a large round or semicircular yellow-orange marking on the middle of the wing's rear edge. The forewing fringes are dark brown, and the hindwings are dark. The head, thorax, abdomen and antennae range from brown to dark brown. In the variant form Pammene aurana var. aurantiana, all the yellow-orange markings merge together, leaving only the wing base, costa and outer edge brown. The caterpillars of this species are whitish with a shiny black-brown head, and reach a length of about 5 millimetres (0.20 in). This species occurs across most of Europe and the Palearctic. To the east, its range extends through southern Siberia and the Alatau, reaching Primorsky Krai in the Russian Far East. Its habitat includes gardens, forest clearings, hedgerows, woodland edges, forest roads, and roadsides.
