About Pallenis maritima (L.) Greuter

Pallenis maritima, commonly called the Mediterranean Beach Daisy or Gold Coin, is a perennial herb in the Asteraceae family. It is native to the Canary Islands, southern Portugal, and parts of the Mediterranean. This species is known for its bright yellow, daisy-like flowers with darker centers. It typically grows to around 30 cm tall, and thrives in coastal, dry environments, where it most often grows in sandy soils. It requires moderate care, particularly when it comes to watering: it should be watered enough to moisten the soil, but not overwatered, to prevent root rot. In its natural habitat, it can survive on rainwater alone, but it benefits from extra watering during extended dry periods. The plant prefers full sun, but needs protection from intense midday heat to avoid sun damage. When grown indoors, it must be shielded from harsh air conditioning, which can dry the plant out. Pallenis maritima is a low-maintenance plant that can adapt to many different climates, as long as it receives enough sunlight and is not overwatered. To cultivate Pallenis maritima, plant it in well-drained sandy soil, ideally in a sunny location that gets at least 3 to 6 hours of light each day. While it grows best in dry, coastal conditions, it needs occasional watering during dry spells. Care must be taken not to overwater, as this causes root rot. Once established, the plant is fairly drought-tolerant and grows well in temperate climates. During hot summer weather, it is important to protect it from harsh midday sun to prevent leaf burn. Regular pruning helps maintain its shape and encourages healthy growth.
