About Packera schweinitziana (Nutt.) W.A.Weber & Á.Löve
Packera schweinitziana, commonly known as New England groundsel, is a flowering plant species belonging to the aster family, Asteraceae. It is native to eastern North America, with its primary range covering eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. Isolated disjunct populations of this species also occur on Roan Mountain in North Carolina and Tennessee. Its natural habitat consists of sunny, wet locations, and it often grows in acidic soil. In the southeastern United States, this species is restricted to the habitat of Appalachian balds. Packera schweinitziana is a perennial herb that grows to approximately 70 cm tall, and it is occasionally rhizomatous. It produces clusters of yellow flower heads from May through July. It can be told apart from the closely similar Packera aurea by the shape of its basal leaves: Packera schweinitziana's basal leaves are lanceolate to triangular, and more than three times as long as they are wide.
