About Oxyura ferruginea (Eyton, 1838)
Oxyura ferruginea (Eyton, 1838) are small, compact ducks with stout, scoop-shaped bills, and long, stiff tails that they often hold cocked upward. They have slightly peaked heads and fairly short, thick necks. In summer, their bodies are a rich chestnut color, and they have bright blue bills. In winter, their upperparts are dull gray-brown and their underparts are paler, and they have dull gray bills. Females and first-year males are brownish, with an appearance similar to that of winter males, but have a blurry stripe across their pale cheek patch. Oxyura ferruginea can be distinguished from the ruddy duck by its all-black face and larger body size.
