About Oxyrhopus occipitalis (Wied-Neuwied, 1824)

Oxyrhopus occipitalis is a neotropical snake species that belongs to the Dipsadidae family. This species is found in Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and Venezuela. It is frequently misidentified as Oxyrhopus formosus, another snake species native to Brazil. The two species can be distinguished by key physical traits: Oxyrhopus occipitalis has a more slender body, a yellow snout, a brown top of the head, and red adult bodies with very faint darker bands. In contrast, Oxyrhopus formosus is more robust, has an entirely yellow head, and adult individuals have clearly visible transverse dark bands.
