About Otus senegalensis (Swainson, 1837)

The African scops owl (scientific name: Otus senegalensis (Swainson, 1837)) is a small owl. It is typically 15–17 cm (5.9–6.7 in) in overall length, with one source specifying a length measurement of 17 cm (6.7 in), and has a wingspan of 45 cm (18 in). Its plumage is usually greyish-brown, but can sometimes be pale rufous or warmer brown, and it has cryptic streaked and mottled markings. Its grey facial disc has a narrow black edge, and its eyes are yellow. This species has ear tufts, which are usually kept lowered unless the bird is disturbed. The African scops owl is endemic to sub-Saharan Africa. It can be found from sea level up to 2,000 m (6,600 ft) in elevation, and inhabits wooded habitats, forest edges, gardens, and mangroves.
