This species, scientifically named Otus lempiji (Horsfield, 1821), grows 20 to 25 cm (7.9 to 9.8 inches) in length, and weighs between 100 and 170 g (3.5 to 6.0 oz). Its upper body parts have black speckling, while its lower body parts have black streaking. It features a light collar and dark eyes, and these traits distinguish it from the reddish scops, mountain scops, Oriental scops, and Rajah scops owls. Otus lempiji is distributed across the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Borneo, Sumatra, and Java. It is primarily found in forests and gardens, and it is occasionally attracted to buildings.
