About Osmoderma scabra (Palisot de Beauvois, 1807)

Osmoderma scabra (originally also referenced as Osmoderma scabrum), commonly called the rough hermit beetle, is a species of scarab beetle belonging to the family Scarabaeidae, within the order Coleoptera. This species occurs in eastern North America, ranging from Quebec in the north down to Tennessee in the south. Adult individuals grow to between 14 and 20 millimeters in length, and are primarily black, sometimes with a metallic sheen. Adult rough hermit beetles are active during the night, and can often be found at sap flows or under tree bark.
