This species is scientifically named Osmia bicolor (Schrank, 1781). Females of Osmia bicolor are small bees that measure 12 mm in length. They have a black head and thorax, and an abdomen covered in bright ginger hair. For males of the species, the ginger color of the abdomen is less intense. Osmia bicolor occurs in Europe and western Asia. Its range extends from southern Great Britain in the west eastward to Turkestan, reaching as far north as southern Scandinavia and Finland, and as far south as Spain and Romania. It inhabits grasslands and open deciduous woodland growing over calcareous soils underlain by rocks like limestone and chalk.
