Orthosia miniosa (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775 has a wingspan of 31–36 mm, and forewings that measure 15–17 mm in length. Its forewings are sandy rufous, speckled with black, and the median area is generally a deeper rufous. The forewing lines are browner, edged with pale colour; the outer line is dentate and lunulate. The stigmata have yellowish outlines and grey centres, while the submarginal line is rufous and yellowish. The hindwings are white, with a rosy tinge along the termen; the cellspot, outer line, and veins are sometimes well-marked. There are three distinct recorded forms of this moth. Form rubricosa Esper has the most emphasized red colour in the median area. Form pallida Tutt is greyish ochreous, with hardly any trace of rufous colour. In form virgata Tutt, the basal and marginal areas are grey, while the median space is rufous.
