About Orthosia hibisci Guenée, 1852

Orthosia hibisci, commonly known as the speckled green fruitworm moth, is a moth species belonging to the family Noctuidae. It is distributed across most of North America, and is absent from desert regions. Its typical habitats include moist forests, riparian zones, agricultural areas, and urban areas. This moth has a wingspan ranging from 30 to 38 millimeters. Its body and wing color varies from pale buff-grey to dark red-brown. The forewing pattern is also highly variable, ranging from nearly non-patterned to distinctly strongly banded forms. Adults produce one generation per year, and are active in flight from late March through April. The larvae of this species feed on a variety of hardwood plants, including species from the plant families Aceraceae, Ericaceae, Betulaceae, Rhamnaceae, Rosaceae, Caprifoliaceae, Fagaceae, and Salicaceae.
