About Orthosia cerasi Fabricius, 1775
Technical description and variation: The wingspan of Orthosia cerasi is 34–40 mm. Its forewing is reddish grey, more or less dusted with dark colour; the inner and outer lines are blackish and indistinct; the orbicular and reniform stigmata are ringed with ochreous; the submarginal line is ochreous and preceded by a fuscous or rufous shade; the claviform is mostly unmarked; the veins towards the termen are pale. The hindwing is grey, with a paler fringe. This species varies based on the amount of red pigment present. The aberration pallida Tutt is pale grey, sometimes with an ochreous flush. The form obliqua Vill. is darker grey with clearer markings. The form suffusa Tutt is a similarly well-marked blackish-grey form. Among these grey forms, only obliqua Vill. is common. When red tints are predominant, the form rufa Tutt occurs, which is also rare. In junctus Haw., the upper stigmata, which are usually separate, are joined together. This accidental connection occurs occasionally in all forms. In aberration rufannulata Haw., the stigmata are edged with rufous, and the submarginal line is coloured rufous instead of ochreous.
