About Orthocarpus luteus Nutt.

Orthocarpus luteus Nutt. is an annual herb. It produces a slender, hairy, glandular stem that ranges in color from bright yellowish green to deep purple, and grows up to around 40 centimeters tall. Its narrow leaves can reach up to 5 centimeters in length, and the upper leaves are sometimes divided into three lobes. Its inflorescence is a dense cylindrical spike made up of green bracts, with flowers emerging from between the bracts. The lightly hairy flowers are 1 to 1.5 centimeters long, bright yellow, and club-shaped. The upper lip of the flower forms a tiny, curving beak, while the lower lip forms a narrow pouch.
