About Orthetrum testaceum (Burmeister, 1839)

Orthetrum testaceum is a species of large dragonfly. In males, body length reaches approximately 43–48 mm (1.7–1.9 in), while hindwing length measures 34–38 mm (1.3–1.5 in). The thorax of adult males is orange-brown, and their abdomen is vermilion red. Their eyes are light brownish, and their wings are smoky transparent with an amber patch at the base. In adult females and recently emerged males, the body ranges from olive-green to brown, has black markings, and the hindwing bases are clear. This species is quite similar to Orthetrum chrysis, but O. testaceum is more reddish overall, whereas O. chrysis has a reddish brown thorax.

This common species is widespread across India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. It can be found in a variety of areas that contain standing water, including ponds, drains, marshes, the surrounding areas of rivers and streams, lakes, and gardens.
