About Orthetrum sabina (Drury, 1773)

Orthetrum sabina (Drury, 1773) is a medium-sized dragonfly with a wingspan ranging from 60 to 85 millimeters. Adult individuals have greyish to greenish yellow bodies marked with black and pale markings, plus green eyes. Their abdomen is greenish-yellow with black markings. This species is very similar in appearance to Orthetrum serapia, and both species occur in northern Australia. When viewed from above, the pale markings on the fourth abdominal segment of Orthetrum sabina do not extend into the posterior section. Females match males in shape, coloration, and size; they only differ in sexual characteristics. This dragonfly can perch motionless on shrubs and dry twigs for long periods of time. It preys voraciously on smaller butterflies and dragonflies.
