About Ortalis erythroptera P.L.Sclater & Salvin, 1870
The rufous-headed chachalaca, scientifically named Ortalis erythroptera P.L.Sclater & Salvin, 1870, measures 56 to 66 cm (1.8 to 2.2 ft) in length and weighs 620 to 645 g (1.4 to 1.4 lb). It has a rufous head and neck, and a gray-brown back. Its central tail feathers are dark gray; the outer tail feathers are gray near the body and chestnut on their outer halves. The lower breast and belly are creamy white, and the primary flight feathers are bright chestnut. A ring of bare bluish gray skin surrounds its brown eye, and its legs are pale blue. This species is found in extreme southwestern Colombia, extreme northwestern Peru, and several small to medium-sized areas in western Ecuador. It lives in dry, non-arid deciduous forest and cloudforest in the coastal zone and Andean foothills. There are unconfirmed reports of it occurring in savannah and brushy habitats. Its elevation range generally extends from sea level to 1,390 m (4,560 ft), but individuals have been seen as high as 1,850 m (6,070 ft) and heard near 2,500 m (8,200 ft).
