About Ornithogalum saundersiae Baker

Ornithogalum saundersiae Baker is a perennial, herbaceous bulbous plant. It grows to a height between 30 and 100 centimeters. Its leaves measure up to 60 centimeters by 5 centimeters, and are less than half as long as the plant's flower stem. The upper surface of the leaves is shiny dark green. The inflorescence is conical and holds numerous flowers, born on long flower stems. Its tepals are white and measure 10 to 15 millimeters in length, and the plant's ovary is very dark green. This species flowers from June through August. In the wild, Ornithogalum saundersiae occurs in South Africa (Eastern Transvaal, Natal) and Eswatini, where it grows best in rocky glades. It is sold as ornamental bulbs for garden planting, and also grown and sold as a cut flower.
