About Orchelimum vulgare Harris, 1841
For identification, Orchelimum vulgare can be recognized by red eyes, green faces, and a distinctly curved ovipositor. They have green bodies and brown legs that let them camouflage into their environment. Two black markings are present on their dorsal shield. Their total body length ranges from 22 to 40 millimetres (0.87 to 1.57 inches), and females are larger than males. Orchelimum vulgare is distributed across most of North America. It prefers fields and low meadows, where individuals perch on clumps of grass. This species adapts best to moderate temperature climates, and cannot tolerate extreme heat or humidity. Like most katydids, Orchelimum vulgare serves as a food source for other organisms.
