About Opuntia elata Link & Otto

Opuntia elata is a fast-growing branching species of Opuntia cactus. It typically reaches 1 to 1.5 meters in both height and spread, and may occasionally grow as large as 3 meters. Its joints produce straight, white spines that measure 3 to 4 centimeters long. The flowers range in color from orange to yellow, and bloom from late spring through summer. Its ripe fruit is club-shaped and purple-red. This species occurs in the Bolivian departments of Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, and Tarija, and also grows in Cuba.
