This cactus has a bluish-green color, and grows in a bushy to erect form that can reach a height of 2 meters or taller. Studies of pollen cores from the Waterman Mountains of Arizona have analyzed the prehistoric range of O. chlorotica, and these analyses show that the species was present in northern Arizona during the late Wisconsinan glaciation period. Opuntia chlorotica Engelm. & J.M.Bigelow is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.
