About Ophrys umbilicata Desf.
Ophrys umbilicata Desf. is a perennial, erect, glabrous herb that grows 10–20 cm tall. Its leaves are alternate, simple, entire, thick, and narrowly elliptic, with parallel veins. Flowers are arranged spirally at the top of the stem; sepals measure 10–15 by 6–9 mm, and petals are small. The labellum is wider in its distal half, measures 9–12 mm, has three teeth at the apex, and is purple to blackish. This species flowers from March to April, and produces a capsule fruit. It grows in garigue, maquis, and open pine woodlands at altitudes between 0 and 600 meters above sea level.
