About Ophrys umbilicata Desf.
Ophrys umbilicata Desf. is a perennial, erect, glabrous herb that grows 10โ20 cm tall. Its leaves are alternate, simple, entire, thick, and narrowly elliptic, with parallel veins. Flowers are arranged spirally at the top of the stem; sepals measure 10โ15 by 6โ9 mm, and petals are small. The labellum is wider in its distal half, measures 9โ12 mm, has three teeth at the apex, and is purple to blackish. This species flowers from March to April, and produces a capsule fruit. It grows in garigue, maquis, and open pine woodlands at altitudes between 0 and 600 meters above sea level.
