About Omocestus rufipes (Zetterstedt, 1821)
Omocestus rufipes, first described by Zetterstedt in 1821, is a species of grasshopper. Adult males of this species reach a body length of 11–17 millimetres (0.43–0.67 inches), while adult females grow to 13–22 millimetres (0.51–0.87 inches) in length. The species' basic body coloration ranges from light brown to blackish. The dorsal side of the body is usually beige in males, and brown or green in females. The pronotum has a white edge. Both males and females have dark hindwings on their rear half. In mature adults of both sexes, the underside of the abdomen's apex is reddish or orange. The apex of the maxillary palps is almost white. In males, the entire tip of the abdomen is red, and males always have red rear tibias, and often have red rear femurs. This species is distributed across most of Europe, the eastern Palearctic realm, North Africa, and the Near East. Within the British Isles, it is restricted to southern England. These grasshoppers live in meadows, grasslands, and sunny woodland clearings.
