About Olpogastra lugubris (Karsch, 1895)

This species, Olpogastra lugubris (Karsch, 1895), is a largish slender bottle-tail. Adults reach a body length of 56mm and a wingspan of 84mm. It has a long, slender abdomen marked with narrow yellow bands, and a narrow waist. Its thorax is olive-coloured with yellow spots, and its long wings are tinted yellow. The species is widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, and has been recorded in Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It may also occur in Burundi. It inhabits rivers, floodplains, streams, and lakes that have sedges or reeds.
