About Oenothera longissima Rydb.

Oenothera longissima is a species of flowering plant in the evening primrose family, with the common name longstem evening primrose. It is native to the southwestern United States, and grows in relatively moist areas within scrub and woodland habitats. This plant is a biennial herb that grows a tall, erect stem that can reach well over 2 meters in height. Its leaves are widely lance-shaped, may grow up to 22 centimeters long, and can have slight teeth along their edges. It produces an inflorescence that forms a spike of large, showy flowers. Each flower has yellow petals that may measure more than 6 centimeters in length, which fade to orange or red as they age. The fruit is a lance-shaped capsule that can grow up to 5.5 centimeters long.
