About Oenothera laciniata Hill

Oenothera laciniata Hill is an annual or short-lived perennial herb. It grows a spreading stem from a hairy rosette of deeply cut or lobed leaves. Its leaves range in shape from oblanceolate to elliptic, and may be irregularly lobed or pinnatifid. Flowers grow in the axils of leaves positioned higher on the stem. Each flower has pale to deep yellow petals up to around 2 centimeters long, which fade to orange, pink, or red as they age. The fruit is a cylindrical capsule that can reach up to 5 centimeters in length.

In terms of habitat and distribution, the native range of O. laciniata extends from Maine to North Dakota, and stretches south to Florida and Texas. Isolated populations have also been reported in California. On the coastal plain of the southeastern United States, this species occurs in pine flatwoods, pine savannas, and shrub bogs.
