About Oenothera deltoides Torr. & Frém.

Oenothera deltoides Torr. & Frém. is a species of evening primrose that goes by several common names: birdcage evening primrose, basket evening primrose, lion in a cage, and devil's lantern. This species is native to the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico, where it grows in sandy habitats ranging from deserts to beaches. The plant is grayish in color, with basal, deltoid-shaped leaves. Its large white flowers become pinkish as they mature. After the plant dies, its stems curl upward to form a shape resembling a birdcage, which is the source of one of its most widely used common names.
