About Oenanthe familiaris (Wilkes, 1817)

Oenanthe familiaris, commonly called the familiar chat, is a dumpy, short-tailed bird that measures 14–15 cm (5.5–5.9 in) in length. Adult birds have dull brown upperparts, with warmer brown ear coverts located behind the eye. Underpart coloration ranges from off-white to pale grey-brown. The rump and outer tail feathers are rufous with dark brown tips, while the central tail feathers are solid dark brown. This species has a short straight bill, and its legs and feet are black. Males and females have identical plumage. Juveniles look similar to adults, but they have buff spots on their upperparts and a scaly patterned breast. The familiar chat produces a soft "shek-shek" alarm call, and its song is a warbling trill.
