About Oedaleus senegalensis (Krauss, 1877)

The Senegalese grasshopper, scientifically named Oedaleus senegalensis, is a medium-sized grasshopper species. Its range covers the Sahel region of Africa, the Canary Islands, the Cape Verde Islands, and West Asia. While this species is not referred to as a locust in English, it displays gregarious behaviour, and develops some morphological changes (phase polymorphism) when populations become crowded. Across many areas of the Sahel, this species often causes more consistent annual crop damage than more well-known locust species, and it commonly attacks crop plants such as pearl millet.
