About Ochrosia oppositifolia (Lam.) K.Schum.
Ochrosia oppositifolia (Lam.) K.Schum. grows as a small to medium-sized tree that reaches a maximum height of 25 metres (82 ft), with a maximum trunk diameter of 50 centimetres (20 in). Its flowers have a corolla that ranges in color from creamy to white. This species grows in coastal forest, coastal bush, or coastal open areas at altitudes up to 100 metres (330 ft), and it is rarely found growing inland. Local communities use this plant medicinally as a carminative; high doses of the plant are used as an abortifacient. Ochrosia oppositifolia is native to areas stretching from the Seychelles, through tropical Asia, to the Pacific. Locally in the Seychelles, it is also known by the common name fruit-bat tree. Oppositines, which are vasorelaxant beta-carbolines, have been isolated from this species.
