About Ochlodes sylvanoides (Boisduval, 1852)
The uppersides of this species' wings are orange with dark borders. Males have black androconia on their forewings, while females have two dark markings on their forewings. The undersides of the wings are variable in appearance, but are generally light brown with lighter spots. The wingspan ranges from 25 to 32 millimetres, which is 0.98 to 1.26 inches.
This species, the woodland skipper, occurs in a wide range of habitats, including woodlands, gardens, and other areas that support grasses. The larvae feed on various species in the Poaceae grass family, including Cynodon dactylon, and species in the genera Phalaris, Elymus, and Agropyron. Adult individuals feed on flower nectar, and are active from midsummer to fall.
