About Niphonyx segregata Butler, 1878

Niphonyx is a monotypic moth genus in the family Noctuidae, erected by Shigero Sugi in 1982. This genus contains only one species: Niphonyx segregata, commonly known as the hops angleshade. The species was first described by Arthur Gardiner Butler in 1878. Niphonyx segregata is endemic to eastern Asia, where it occurs across the Russian Far East, the Korean Peninsula, Japan, China, and Taiwan. It was introduced into northeastern United States in the 1990s, and its introduced range extends south from Connecticut to at least Delaware. The wingspan of Niphonyx segregata ranges from 25 to 30 mm. In North America, this species has two generations per year. The larvae of Niphonyx segregata feed on hop species.
