About Nilus albocinctus (Doleschall, 1859)
Nilus albocinctus (Doleschall, 1859) has a synonym Thalassius albocinctus, and is commonly called the fishing spider. It is a species of spider found in tropical Asia, ranging from India to the Philippines. It gets its common name from its habit of catching small fish. This spider has a striking appearance, and can be easily recognized by a black, glossy, broad median band that is bordered by a white lateral band on both the cephalothorax and abdomen. Its legs are long and yellowish brown. It is usually found near bodies of water. Female Nilus albocinctus, which belong to the pisaurid spider family, create their egg case in one piece, and carry it under their body using their chelicerae. This trait differs from female lycosid spiders, which look similar to this species; lycosid females construct their egg case in two pieces, and fasten it behind their body using their spinnerets.
