About Nicotiana alata Link & Otto
This species has a scientific name of Nicotiana alata Link & Otto. It flowers from summer through fall, grows best in locations ranging from full sun to partial shade, and produces flowers in lime green, maroon red, white, yellow, pink, and crimson; one plant may occasionally produce multiple different colors. Plants reach a height of 30 to 60 cm (12 to 24 inches), and should be spaced 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16 inches) apart. Nicotiana alata has low drought tolerance. It carries a lovely fragrance that is most noticeable from evening through night; most varieties open their flowers from late afternoon into the evening. For cultivation, seedlings grow best when they are gradually acclimated to the outdoor environment over a period of one week. These plants tend to self-seed. To encourage the best blooming, remove dead spent flower stalks by deadheading.
