About Neurothemis stigmatizans (Fabricius, 1775)
Neurothemis stigmatizans, commonly called the painted grasshawk, is an Australian dragonfly species belonging to the family Libellulidae. The genus Neurothemis has a distribution ranging from India to the western Pacific. This particular species occurs in northern Australia, along an arc stretching from the southern Queensland border to Broome, Western Australia. It is a medium-sized dragonfly with a wingspan of 60 to 85 millimeters, and it lives in still waters near grassy areas. Males have a reddish-brown abdomen marked with a lighter dorsal stripe. Their wings bear deep reddish-brown markings that extend past the nodus, with contrasting paler veins. Females are pale greenish-yellow with a dark dorsal stripe and a dark side stripe. Their wings are mostly transparent, with a dark smudge beyond the nodus and dark wingtips. Both sexes have a pink or pale colored pterostigma.
