About Nessaea aglaura (Doubleday)

Nessaea aglaura (Doubleday), commonly known as the common olivewing, northern nessaea, or Aglaura olivewing, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Nymphalidae. This species can be found ranging from Mexico to Panama, as well as in Ecuador, Venezuela, and Colombia. It inhabits both evergreen tropical forests and semi-deciduous tropical forests. For males, the wing length measures 31–34 mm, while female wing length ranges from 28–36 mm. Adult Nessaea aglaura are in flight nearly year-round. This species is distinct for having actual blue pigments in its wings, rather than producing the appearance of blue through structural coloration. The larvae of Nessaea aglaura feed on Alchornea costaricensis and Plukenetia volubilis.
