About Neptis rivularis (Scopoli, 1763)

Neptis rivularis, commonly known as the Hungarian glider, is a species of butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae. Its distribution ranges across Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, central Asia, and the Far East extending as far east as Japan. Adult individuals have a wingspan of 25 to 27 mm. This butterfly prefers forest habitats, and its caterpillars feed on plants from the genus Spiraea. The upper side of its forewings is black or black-brown, marked with a band of white spots. One or more additional smaller white spots occur between this white band and the base of the wing. The outermost edge of the forewing is narrow and colored white. The underside of the forewings is rusty brown, and carries the same white markings found on the upper side. The upper side of the hindwings is also black or black-brown, with a white outer edge and a broad semicircular white band that is only interrupted by the dark wing veins. The underside of the hindwings is rust-brown, holds the same white markings from the upper side, and has its white band outlined in black. This species is very similar in appearance to Neptis sappho.
