About Neoscona vigilans (Blackwall, 1865)

Neoscona vigilans has the standard body plan of an orb-weaver spider, with females that are considerably larger than males. Females reach a total body length of 11 to 16 mm, while males measure 7 to 9 mm. The cephalothorax is yellowish-brown with variable spotting, and the legs have distinct banding patterns. The abdomen has a characteristic dorsal pattern, with a wedge-shaped mark and folium design that is common to many species in the Neoscona genus. In females, the epigyne has a distinctive structure: its openings face laterally and are covered by pointed ridges that extend far enough outward to be visible beside the scape when viewed from below. The tibiae of the first and second pairs of legs bear spines that are diagnostic for this species. Spines on the first tibia are only slightly elongated, while spines on the second tibia are thickened, slightly shortened, and distributed evenly from the base to the tip. Males can be identified by the structure of their pedipalp, most notably the flattened tip of the median apophysis (which differs from the twisted tips found in related species) and the cone-shaped lateral extension of the conductor. This species shows some geographic variation: specimens from Africa lack a tegular tubercle that is present in specimens collected from Nepal. Neoscona vigilans has been recorded across a very broad range that includes sub-Saharan Africa, Oman, Iran, Pakistan, India, China, Japan, and New Guinea. Within Africa, it occurs from Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the west to Kenya and Tanzania in the east, and extends as far south as South Africa. The species range stretches across the Arabian Peninsula and through Asia into the Indomalayan region. Neoscona vigilans constructs orb-webs at night in vegetation. It removes its webs early each morning, and rests on plants during the day. In South Africa, the species has been sampled from the Forest, Indian Ocean Coastal Belt, Grassland, Nama Karoo, and Savanna biomes.
