About Neoscona punctigera (Doleschall, 1857)

Neoscona punctigera is a widespread orb-weaver spider species with a distribution ranging from Japan to mainland Asia, Australia, and several Western Indian Ocean islands. Females of this species grow to approximately 1.1 centimeters (0.43 inches) in length, while males reach about 0.7 centimeters (0.28 inches). When resting on bark during the day, N. punctigera has effective camouflage. At night, when it actively hunts, the spider sits in its web and uses bright, contrasting spots on the underside of its abdomen to attract insect prey. This species constructs spiral-shaped webs. N. punctigera and its close relatives, such as N. vigilans, are commonly found in the Philippines. In this region, females of the species are frequently used for spider fighting events.
