About Neoblechnum brasiliense (Desv.) Gasper & V.A.O.Dittrich
Neoblechnum brasiliense (Desv.) Gasper & V.A.O.Dittrich has an erect rhizome that forms a thin trunk covered in old stipe stubs, reaching up to 30 centimetres (12 inches) in height. Its new foliage is a striking deep red, and maturing fronds turn to a glossy green. Some cultivated selections produce new fronds that emerge pinkish-red. This fern is native to warm, humid subtropical forests of South America and Guatemala. Its natural habitats include the Atlantic Forest biome of southeastern Brazil, Uruguay, and the interior regions of Argentina and Paraguay, as well as the Amazon region spanning Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Guyana. Neoblechnum brasiliense is cultivated as an ornamental plant. In the United Kingdom, it is grown under the synonym Blechnum brasiliense and has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Because it cannot tolerate temperatures below 15 °C (59 °F), it must be grown under glass year-round in temperate regions.
