About Navarretia hamata Greene
Navarretia hamata Greene is an annual herb with hairy, glandular textures. It produces a spreading, erect stem that grows up to approximately 30 centimeters tall, and it typically has a strong skunky scent. Its leaves are divided into narrow, sharp-tipped lobes, and the lobes at the tip of each leaf are hooked. The inflorescence is a head filled with green, leaflike bracts. The flowers are pink or purple, tubular, have five-lobed corollas, and can reach up to 1.5 centimeters in length. This plant is native to the coastal mountains and valleys of California and Baja California. Its range extends from the Monterey Bay area, through the Central Coast, to the lower slopes of the Transverse Ranges and Peninsular Ranges, and to coastal mesas in Southern California. It also grows on three of the Channel Islands and occurs further south into Baja California. It is often found as a member of chaparral flora.
