About Navarretia atractyloides (Benth.) Hook. & Arn.
Navarretia atractyloides (Benth.) Hook. & Arn. is a species of flowering plant in the phlox family, commonly known as hollyleaf pincushionplant. It is native to the coastal mountain ranges of western North America, ranging from Oregon through California to Baja California, where it grows in open areas of local habitat types. This species is similar to Navarretia hamata, but it does not have the skunky scent that characterizes N. hamata. It is a hairy, glandular annual herb that reaches a maximum height close to 30 centimeters (12 inches). Its leaves are strap-shaped, with abrupt divisions that form small, narrow teeth at regular intervals. The inflorescence is a head packed full of spine-toothed, leaf-like bracts. Flowers are tucked between these bracts; they are light purple or occasionally white, with reddish veining in their tubular throats. Each flower measures just under a centimeter long and has a five-lobed corolla.
