About Nabalus altissima (L.) Hook.
This plant has the scientific name Nabalus altissima (L.) Hook., and is also commonly referred to as Nabalus altissimus. It was formerly classified as Prenanthes altissima, and was reclassified from the genus Prenanthes to Nabalus in 2010. This species is commonly known by the common names tall rattlesnakeroot or white lettuce. It is a perennial herbaceous wildflower that belongs to the family Asteraceae, and is native to eastern North America. This perennial grows in mesic environments, including riparian zones. It is frequently found growing in forests made up of Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum), American Basswood (Tilia americana), and American Beech (Fagus grandifolia). It produces blooms in late summer and autumn. Its natural range covers the eastern United States, extending west to Michigan, Missouri, and Texas, as well as Quebec, Canada. It has not been recorded in Mississippi or Florida. In Texas, it is only found in Jasper and Newton counties, located in the extreme southeastern portion of the state.
